An IEP is a legal document that outlines specialized education and services for students with disabilities. It’s designed for students who meet eligibility criteria under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). IEPs include measurable goals and may incorporate specialized instruction, accommodations, and related services tailored to the student’s needs.
A BIP is a formal plan developed for students whose behavior impacts their learning or that of others. It is often created following a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA), which identifies the reasons behind challenging behaviors. The BIP includes specific strategies to address and modify these behaviors, promoting positive changes that support the student’s educational and social success. BIPs can be part of an IEP or 504 Plan or stand alone when behavioral support is the primary need.
A 504 Plan is designed for students who require accommodations but do not qualify for special education services under IDEA. Under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, students with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities can receive accommodations to support their learning.
